For anime 2019 was a great year. We saw a host of new incredible animes around the year along with sequels of old ones. Like every year, there is a lot of discussion going on about the best shows that were premiered. Popular ones like Demon Slayer, Dr.Stone, Attack on Titan, My hero academia, Vento Aureo, etc are celebrated by almost everyone.
Likewise, there are a few less-noticed ones, that unfortunately despite having great anime elements, were left out of the limelight. This is a list of 10 of the most underrated Anime of 2019 which needs more attention from all the weebs and otakus out there. They may not be for everyone, but for those who love the particular genre, these animes might be what you’re looking for.
The word ‘ Underrated’ is a bit ambiguous. In this list Animes released in 2019 with great potential, yet having less than or around 100k members in its corresponding listing on MyAnimeList is considered Underrated. I’m sure there will be more to add, as I only included Animes I’ve watched. Feel free to comment your favorites in case I left it out.
10. Hoshiai no Sora
When it comes to sports anime there are many gold standards already established. Hoshiai no Sora or ‘Stars Align’ is a tennis Anime that deals not just with sports but also internal conflicts and personal lives. It deals with the life of Maki Katsuragi, a middle school boy who got dragged into playing Tennis in order to help the school tennis club from disbandment. Though this seems like a generic sports anime plot, the best part about this anime is the storytelling and character development.
This anime is not just about the inspirational side of sports anime, but also the sad part. The backstories are designed in such a way that you get attached to the characters easily.

9. Boogiepop wa Warawanai
Boogiepop wa Warawanai or Boogiepop Never Laughs is one of those anime you only see once in a year or two. One could think it is storytelling at its finest, with excellent direction and suggest it to a friend only to get the exact opposite reaction. Simply, it is that complex.
Boogiepop wa Warawanai is a psychological horror anime adapted from the Boogiepop light novel series that started publishing back in 1998. It follows the central character Booigiepop who is a rumored Shinigami killing off people in their most beautiful form.
What gives this anime its unique form is the characters that come and go throughout it. We may see these characters more often than the protagonist itself. It is very slow-paced at first, jumping from one timeline to another through non-linear storytelling. You may even need to re-watch some episodes to get a clue of what is happening. But collectively if you have the patience to go through all 18 episodes you are in for a unique experience.
Warning: Don’t watch it if you’re not into dark, violent themes.

8. Hitoribocchi no Marumaru Seikatsu
If you feel like having a fun time and looking for something to chuckle like a child this anime might suite you. It is a really light and cute slice of life anime with adorable characters. We follow a young girl named Bocchi Hitori who suffers from social anxiety entering middle school. Her prime objective – Make friends with everyone in her class.

7. O Maidens in Your Savage Season
In a world where Ecchi anime and unnecessary fan service exist, there needs a show like this to actually talk about sexuality and romance. Though O Maidens in Your Savage Season (Araburu Kisetsu no Otome-domo yo) is an anime enveloped in comedy, the actual plot it deals with is something every teenage girl or boy went through. It is basically a story of sexually repressed teenage girls who wants to get laid.
But it is what the unexpected situations and the inner monologues or self-realizations of the characters make this anime beautiful. It is something you can easily relate to if you are past your adolescent period where you went through the enthusiasm regarding the opposite gender.
Recommended for: Those who like Melodrama or emotional content.
6. Senryuu Shoujo
‘Beautiful like a poem’ – that’s the only words to express this anime. Senryuu Shoujo or Senryuu Girl may not be an anime for everyone. It’s for those who find poetry or literature in everything around them, or at least for those who can appreciate it. The story revolves around Nanako Yukishiro, who can’t speak but communicates using written Senryuu – 17-syllable-long poems.
The relationship between Nanako and Eiji Busujima, a former delinquent turned poetry lover is the main focus of this anime. Everything including their lives in the school and the literature club is supported by Senryuu.
The anime is an adaptation of the Senryuu Shoujo Manga. Each episode is 12 min long with a total of 12. It is undoubtedly one of the cutest anime of 2019. It’s a great watch if you want a feel-good, light and relaxing anime once in a while. Just make sure you have a minimum understanding of Senryuu or Haiku poems before you start.

5. Ascendance of a Bookworm
For the past 4-5 years, we are seeing an abundance of isekai anime. Now it’s almost like at least one-third of the anime released each season features the MC getting transported to another world. And at least 90 percent of these features an overpowered MC in an action-adventure setting or a complete parody. Ascendance of a Bookworm (Honzuki no Gekokujou: Shisho ni Naru Tame ni wa Shudan wo Erandeiraremasen) is the complete opposite of this.
Here, the MC is a bookworm is reincarnated as a frail 5-year-old girl in a Medieval timeline. And her only objective in that new world is to be able to read a book! Because books are rare and expensive in the new world, she has to find new ways to fulfill her urge for reading.

4. My Roommate is a Cat
If you truly admire slice of life anime, then this might be for you. undoubtedly one of the best of the year. We follow Subaru Mikazuki, a 23-year-old mystery novel author, who lost his parents in an accident. He shuts himself down from the outer world and unnecessary interactions until a cat enters his life. It’s a story of human and animal interactions, who support each other no matter the differences they have. The voice actor for Haru (the cat) has done an exceptional job of giving life and emotions to her character.
It may not be an anime for everyone. But if you are looking for not just comedy, but a true slice of life anime that can make you smile along with a few tears, this is a great watch.

3. High Score Girl II
High Score Girl first season was aired back in 2018, and in my opinion, it was the most underrated show of that year. Unfortunately, that fate continues with its second season released in summer 2019 as well. This might be one of the best romantic comedy of the year (remember we had plenty in that category this year) with some original/unique characters. I mean one of the protagonists doesn’t speak at all.
The only downside of this anime is the art department. Especially that it’s a CGI animation. Which might be unpleasant the first time you watch it. But It is understandable because of the many in-game visuals that require it. But apart from that it is extremely nostalgic for an anime, especially if you were a 90s kid who used to (or still) admires video games.

2. Astra Lost in Space
Astra Lost in Space or Kanata no Astra is what I call a complete package. Set in a future world, where a group of 9 students goes on a space tour, and the events that follow are the main theme. It may sound generic, but you’ll be impressed as the story progress with mystery and constant plot twists along the way.
This anime has it all – Fantasy, Adventure, Drama, Romance, Comedy, Sci-fi elements, Mystery and much more. Most importantly it provides a satisfying closure, that too within 12 episodes (without rushing to an end). That’s why I call it a complete package.

I’m sure most of you might’ve already heard of Beastars, yet I don’t see a lot watching it. Simply speaking it is Zootopia if it was an Anime. But in reality, It is dark, complex and a lot more intriguing than a Disney fantasy. It is the characters that make it a masterpiece.
In this anime, we follow the protagonist Legosi, a wolf in a school environment where the carnivores versus herbivores tension is rising because of an incident that happened in the school drama club. The depiction of the main characters going through Self-doubt, anxiety, self-worth, and a myriad of other personal struggles are truly remarkable. Conquering one’s inner beasts and carnal desires have been a theme of many anime, but here we get to see them in Animals in a 3rd person point of view. It is packed with a wonderful OST, that goes in with emotions and above the top voice acting that packs a serious punch.
The only let down with this anime some people may experience is that it is a CGI animation. But it is very well done and you will get used to it in an episode or two.

Bonus #1 : Ahiru no Sora
This anime is in the bonus list because it is too early to judge it. It is listed for 50 episodes and only completed 13 episodes as of now. But still, it’s really worth mentioning.
Ahiru no Sora is the new basketball anime in anime town. Unlike most other basketball anime, the protagonist here – Sora Kurumatani, is at a major height disadvantage. He goes to a new high school with his love and passion for basketball hoping to join their basketball team, only to find that the whole club consists of delinquents who have no interest in the game.
So far, its a great watch for not just sports anime fans but everyone. Especially because of the comedy and unique characters. It is a good suggestion for anyone starting on Sports anime.
